Free METAtropolis story from Audible

While they aren't a sponsor, Audible.com has been kind enough to treat Sword and Laser fans to a free download of the first story from their new Metatropolis series. So we said, why not?! METAtropolis is an interesting project. It's an original audiobook, meaning there's no print version. The stories are published directly to audio. The first story is entitled “In the Forest of the Night” written by Jay Lake (author of “Mindspring“) and features the voice of Michael Hogan better known to many of you as Colonel Tigh from Battlestar Galatica. The complete audio book, featuring five unabridged novellas will be released on Oct. 21, 2008.

Don't feel like registering for an account? No problem. Audible's also throwing in a free sample of another story from METAtropolis called “To Hie From Far Cienia” by Karl Schroder (read by Stefan Rudnicki). This isn't the whole story, but there's nothing required except to click to download.

I think this is smart on behalf of Audible. They are commissioning original content, hiring writers to write it and publicizing it to people who are most likely to buy (Sword and Laser fans, ftw), not to mention the first free audiobook AND having sci-fi actors read METAtropolis is enough to trigger a geekgasm. Having already preordered METAtropolis, I think Audible is appealing to the right audience.
My only problem with audible.com is that they use DRM and a propritary audio encoding that is not able to be used in a Linux OS, therfore making it imposible for my to use them even though I have a MP3 player that is compatible (according to there site). After talking to there support team I have found out that they are working on a linux port (only because Amazon bought audible.com), but that it is most likely going to be summer of 2009 at the earliest that Linux will be supported.
