#017 - The S&L Podcast: Let's talk about ...er... sex?

Really, most of the episode is about The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan:

UPDATE: Hopefully the file will work now in iTunes!

We disucssed the paralells to other fantasy worlds like Lord of the Rings and even World of Warcraft. We also passed along Randy's post from the Ning site about the Robert Jordan convention which you can find out more about by visiting
www.AgeofLegends.net.

But then we got to talking about Watchmen near the end and one thing led to another. It all came back around to Robert Jordan though as we discussed Sean O'Hara's Ning thread called Sexbots and dragons.

Speaking of the Ning group, we called out a couple of user-created groups that aren't related to official book club selections. Take a gander at the Alternate History group if you like to pretend things are different than they way they really are. And a really cool group that crosses TV fandom with literature, The Lost literary references group.

Finally we settled on Frank Herbert's Dune as the next book. We'll kick it off in the April episode, so if you have any questions, or non-spoiler thoughts for newbies to the book, let us know here in the comments

Has the show been posted to iTunes? I saw this in my RSS reader but didn't see anything in iTunes, nor have I seen it on the Ning front page..

Sweet! I never read Dune or saw the movie. I'll now have something to read during my vacation! Yeah!!! :D

I saw this in my RSS reader too, but there is, at the time of me writing this, no enclosure tag for episode 17 (which probably explains terpkristin's problem too).

I haven't read Dune since 1984 or so, and it looks to be available for the Kindle now.

I've needed a reason to read Dune. There is a RP sim for it in Second Life too, which has always seemed pretty empty when I've visited. Maybe we should do an interactive read. Hehe.

Excited that the next book is Dune! Coincidentally I just downloaded the audiobook from audible last week. I'm only about two hours in, but the production value is stellar. There's a whole cast and they all seem to be top notch voice actors. I'd definitely recommend the audiobook for anybody who might be curious.

I don't know why it didn't show up in iTunes... very weird.

Brandon Sanderson (http://www.brandonsanderson.com) is writing the last 1-2 Wheel of Time books. I recommend his Mistborn trilogy. I read Mistborn: The Final Empire to get a feel for the author, and I couldn't put down the rest of the trilogy.

I purchased Dune from Fictionwise and put it on my Palm TX. Great to have a digital edition instead of DT.

I found it very amusing that you guys continuously compared WOT to the works of Tolkien because I have never read Tolkien! I would have never known there were so many references in Eye if you hadn't said so!!! WOT, Dune, and The Dragonriders of Pern are pretty much the only fantacy epochs I'm familiar with! I have read and re-read WOT many times. Many, many, many, many, MANY times and I'm not exagerating! The truly great thing about WOT is that I always find something new every time I read it and you guys just showed me ANOTHER new thing!! Maybe I'll read Tolkien now. Maybe. You guys are gonna love Dune when you read it, by the way! While you're at it check out the song about Dune, written by Iron Maiden, called To Tame a Land on their Piece of Mind album. It will at least give you an idea on how to pronounce some of the words and names in Dune so you can concentrate more on the story!! Here's an excerpt from the song: "Without a stillsuit you would fry--on the sands, so hot and dry--on a world, called Arakis.--It's the land that's rich in spice,--the sandriders and the mice--that they call, the muad dib.--He is the Kwizats Hadarach (it's been a while I can't spell anymore!),--he was born of Callidan,--and will take--The Gom Jabar.--He has the power to forsee, or to look into the past.--He's the ruler of the stars."

If any of you do cheat and watch the movie - please watch the extended (3 hour) release.

It was considered a sin to release a movie longer than 2 hours in those days, and a great story suffered as a result.

Just to add to the WOT info (I am a HUGE WOT geek) the beginning of the end should happen in Nov. 2009. The Gathering Storm should be published, it is the first volume of the last book. TOR is looking to release a book year form this point, Brandon Sanderson is hard at work. For more info look to dragonmount.com, they also have a pod cast discussing... most everything you caught, though or missed when reading WOT.

Man! I am so at odds with this podcast, but I believe that the similarities to Tolkien's LOR is merely in the first book. As Rand and the rest develop, quite a different story develops as the characters become much more distinct and unique with time. Ah, who cares, no one listens to this podcast anymore anyways. I just thought it quite necessary to explain that this series is, in my mind, very different from LOR in many ways.
