Interview with Patrick Rothfuss - The S&L Podcast #54

Patrick Rothfuss

We have the distinct pleasure of interviewing Patrick Rothfuss, author of The Name of the Wind and the forthcoming A Wise Man's Fear, which hits bookshelves March 1. We find out that the four corners of civilization had some tabletop roots, we determine Jim Butcher is a cylon who consorts with dark powers and reveal that Patrick has written a first pass at the ending of the Kingkiller Chronicle. But don't get selfish. He and George R. R. Martin are on the same team after all. He promises it shouldn't take horribly long to finish, but even if it does, we're certain it's worth the wait.

Loved the interview. My respect for Rothfuss just shot up levels upon levels I love that he realizes that fans aren't always the best people to listen to when shaping your story. There's just so many of us and we all want different things, that he really does just need to write what HE wants to. Not what we want him to. I also loved his remark about loving books that have flaws and only liking those without them. There is a definite quality in some novels that just hook you and don't let you go and that's not always dependent on the style or technicality of the writing. I love that he says he writes to something break hearts. That's why I read. I want my heart broken. I want a story and set of characters that I can come to love so much that it has me in the pits because of what happened to them. There's nothing more powerful than a story being able to play on your emotions like that.

One last thing, Rothfuss writing an urban fantasy? [well thinking about it] That's by far one of the most awesome things ever. It's my genre of choice and I would love to see such a talented and wise author writing in it. We need more authors at the Jim Butcher level in UF.
