Solve this puzzle for a secret look at Mira Grant’s BLACKOUT

Yesterday, io9 published an excerpt of Mira Grant's Blackout, the final book in her Newsflesh trilogy. Today, an intrepid Newsie hacked into the CDC computer system and liberated another file. For this one, though, you'll have to do a little digging...

Below is a puzzle whose answer reveals one of the five codes you'll need to access the second, top-secret document.

Rumor has it that you should be hanging around these other blogs to gather the other four:

Rose-Owls and Pumpkin Girls (The Journal of Seanan McGuire)

The Mary Sue

SF Signal

Fantasy Café

Once you've gathered all five codes, you can access the encrypted document at the Orbit Books site. WARNING: Massive spoilers for Feed and Deadline ahead!

Blackout will be available May 22nd.

Let us know where you would hole up during a zombie apocalypse in the comments below, and you will be entered to win the Newsflesh triology (FeedDeadlineBlackout)! Open to participants in the US, Canada, and the UK. Winner will be randomly selected on May 2nd!

My emergency cargo container hidden in the woods of Maine. I'd welcome you all aboard, but if I told you where it is, I'd have to kill you :)

I will gather as many supplies as I can and get out into the Gulf of Mexico. Only coming back ashore to resupply whenever I have to.

I would attempt to hole up in the tardis with the doctor as the tardis has to be the safest place ever! Plus i'd be with a total genius who could call an army together to help me to beat off some of the zombies and defend our planet while he comes up with a clever idea to anihilate all zombies!! and after all that be home in time for tea!!!

Ala! You still have to give us your zombie apocalypse plans too!

oh duh, I'm slow.

Which is why, when the zombiepocalypse happens, I'm just going to lay down in the street and go quietly.

I'd gather as much ammo as I could get my hands on to go with my 12 gauge and .38 pistol and bug out and try to drive from MI to my family in NJ. I'd then hole up with them up in the woods at my Uncle's secluded home. My wife wouldn't enjoy the ride, but it'd be our best chance.

If there is one thing L4D taught me, the best place to hide out is on a boat (cruise ship! clear it room by room) or deserted island in the middle of the Atlantic.

Pros:
- remote, presumably zombies won't have the skills to power machinery and reach us
- mobile, boat can bring you to where the food/weapons/ammo/medical supplies are

Cons: zombie sharks. GD zombie sharks

Any nearby Military center would seem like a good place to start. A military vehicular repair center would be nice, no lack of transportation. Guess I check the Map of the Dead to find the best place. [http://www.mapofthedead.com/]

I would hole up in the forests of Maine.

I would gather my supplies and lock myself in a now abandoned mausoleum. What zombie would think of looking for the living in a graveyard?

I would start by leaving wherever I was to get to the closest defensible building with good line of sight. From there I would work on holing up the weak links and creating access to electrical sewage and other maintenance tunnels I could use to travel for supplies and help survivors. Hoarding priority would be food>water>weapons>communications and explicit protocol for anyone leaving or entering the fortress would be adhered to.

My local Walmart or Home Depot would be my choice. They're literally right next to each other. There's a Sam's club right behind Walmart, 3 gas stations within a quarter mile, and just about every other type of store you would need within a mile or two.

I'd find a way to take over that zombie-proof house in Poland. That seems like the best option.

I will hole up in the elder temples of Yog Sogsoth and Cthulhu, chanting invocations from the Necronomicon in hopes that I will Be Eaten First and won't have to watch the place be overrun with zombies. Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn! (But I hope I get to read the rest of Seanan's books before we're all eaten!)

I would hold up in the frozen north of Canada, at least the permafrost will slow them down.

Um. From looking for answers in my ebook of Feed, I think #4 has an error.

I would go hide in a Costco somewhere. I'd be set for food and water for the most part!

I would probably stay in my (high up) bedroom. And die quickly.

Depends is this Mira Grant's zombie apocalypse with zombie wild life or a regular zombie apocalypse where I just want to get out of populated areas as quickly as possible? I'm pretty sure in Mira's apocalypse I'm a goner

I'd hole up in a Costco. No windows, lots of food and pills. Though I figure I'd probably get caught by the zombies while en route.

Uh. Democratic candidate? He wasn't the Democratic candidate...

I'll hole up with my in-laws -- rural area, good farming, self-sufficient and defensible.

I have no living off the land survival skills, so after a futile attempt at holing up in my house, I will be swarmed and turned.
April 26, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterjulia
I think I'd find a forest, and try to live in the trees. As in, off the ground.
