S&L Podcast - #102 - I, Dictator

It's a roller-coaster ride of emotions this week, as we say goodbye to one of science fiction's greatest writers, revel in swordfighting, and declare Veronica all-powerful.  But there's also voting for the July book pick.  Don't let all that democracy go to your head though.

Hello Tom and Veronica,
In your last episode you mentioned that you noticed that fantasy seems to be more popular in later years than scifi, after which veronica immediately dissmissed the notion and attributed it to the popularity of game of thrones. It is not true, although game of thrones is extremely popular it's popularity is a simptom and not a cause.
It is a well known fact that scifi had been slowing down as a ganre for 30 years, and in the same time the fantasy ganre had been on the rise, and it seems that during the last decade these trends had became more prominent.
Love your show,
Shaul from Israel.
Keeping a candle in the window for scifi.

I get interested in many of their book recommendations, and I regret listening to the spoiler for The Magicians - it ruined the book for me, but they don't give the title after the synopsis of the book, so I always miss the title.

Where can I find the book (Tigana) in any form? I can't seem to find it in Europe, wIth any of your spelling.

Is a large chunk of the podcast missing, or is it just an issue with my setup? I am listening from the site and it ends suddenly during the calendar section at 19:21.

Oh, sorry i just meant i can't seem to find a way to buy the book, in Europe. I wish i could find an audiobook version but i can't find any kind of digital version (even as ebook) except a book by Guy Gavriel Kay and i don't care about that guy.

Some are of the opinion that sci-fi is on the decline not because the public response, but because network execs don't "get it". They jump on the fantasy stuff because they have seen the dollars brought in by HARRY POTTER, TWILIGHT, etc.. Arguably, they have a point. Point out a literary sci-fi series that has brought in nearly as much in earnings. Maybe the Star Wars books?...all of them put together? But, book for book, I don't think there is a series that stands up to these earning titans.

But all is not lost in the realm of sci fi. If you are interested in pimping their project...big name writers, producers, FX people are pooling their talents on a new project and raising funds through Kickstarter, SPACE COMMAND. I'm sure they wouldn't mind another platform to garner potential contributors.

Meanwhile, try and forget about PROMETHEUS and focus on the upcoming remake of TOTAL RECALL.

I am a recent 'new' member to Goodreads and the group Sword and Laser. I discovered you guys through Geek and Sundry. I have never been so happy to discover a group of people who share a love for Science Fiction and Fantasy. Your show is awesome and the coverage I have watched and listened to (yup, I am going though the old shows on iTunes right currently) are just fantastic. Please keep up your pace and the good work. I am loving it. I will be watching to find a way to insert myself into the flow of the Goodreads forum as well as your Yourtube and website. Well done - Mathew from Phoenix

Sci-fi may be slowing down, but I don't think Eureka cancellation is a sign. Eureka is in it's fifth season, with an opportunity to conclude the series instead of just being dumped. That sounds like a pretty good run to me.
