#022 – The S&L Podcast: George R. R. Martin is not your bitch
It's time to pick a new book, but for some reason we just can't stop talking about George R. R. Martin. And in some cases singing about him. But we DID pick a new book and it's The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. It involves relativity, interstellar war and sad soldiers. In fact it's sometimes thought of as an anti-Starship Troopers. We think this book is a timely choice as Ridley Scott is making a 3D movie out of it. More on that in this and future episodes. If you want a sneak peek, take a look at this Forever War' Concept Art .
Also don't forget we're doing a live Sword and Laser in Atlanta at Dragon*Con! The show takes place Friday evening, September 4 at 8:30 PM in Hilton room 204. It will be Veronica, me and special guest Timothy Zahn. Other guests may be announced as well.

I'd make an "all I got was this lousy t-shirt slogan" joke, but I can't muster the snark. Today, I'm a proud marketer.
I'm going to sit this one out. Some guy picked this book for the first round of a SF book club he was trying to do on Twitter, but I couldn't get into it at all. I will blame it on it just not being my thing, rather than saying the book is "bad." I don't watch war movies, war tv shows, or even war documentaries either. My eyes start to glaze over when military strategy or weapons are described in any detail. :)
Maybe I'll read the next George RR Martin instead! I've been thinking about it!
This is great info for us all. Glad you posted this. I am subscribing to this blog.
Хорошо пишете. Надеюсь, когда-нибудь увижу нечто подобное и на своем блоге…
love the pick T and V....i love Haldeman stuff and this was the first one I read that he wrote. Haldeman writes really well and his other works branch out into other ideas. Like using eternal life as a means to explore what is the meaning of life etc...there is also some good follow ups to the Forever War that came out in the last ten years. Can't wait to hear what you guys think of this work.
I thought you were going to go through all 4 GRRM books. :)
Wow! Tom!
Thanks for the shout out!
(I HAVE been listening since ep. 1 btw... bookgeek... I confess)
On your discussion about Asimov's 3 laws: Folks often forget that Asimov didn't create the laws as a gift to society. He created them as a plot device for mystery stories where the laws were circumvented to commit crimes (including murder).

Insightful. I had not considered this point of view before.
