Downloaded Windup girl. On your last podcast Veronica said she had trouble with some of the names and words, but as an American living in Thailand they all seemed perfectly normal to me. I am indeed called a "Farang" here. Farang is word specifically used for Caucasians and is not used for any other racial group. The Rambutan (the "u" is pronounced like the "u" in rude or food with the stress on the last syllable) the Thais call it a "ngoa". Thai is a tonal language and I have never mastered that "ng" sound at the beginning of a word. Anyway, it is a real fruit with a red husk and has large green hairs protruding from it. It is quite delicious and is a popular item at most Thai markets. I have to hand it Paolo Bacigalupi, he certainly captured a lot of the Thai culture and spirit during his stay here, which has made the book more authentic to me. It is a fascinating concept.

Oops! I know there is no "food" but I was going more for the phonetic sound of the word.
