LARP-off! - The S&L Podcast #030

This episode is mostly about catching up on the news.  But we slipped into something that's becoming a regular segment, the Game of Thrones check-in.  And during this check-in, we created the future battle between the Na'vi and the Dothraki role-players.  That's right.  We're calling for a LARP-off. This is happening.

We also do a check-in on Paolo Bacigalupi's Wind-up Girl, which we'll wrap-up next episode.

Great podcast, though David Eddings died, 2 June 2009.

I say you demand this LARP-off occur at next year's Dragon Con. ;)

David Eddings died last June :(

Beneath the Planet of the Apes blows up the earth, as does When Worlds Collide. Those other unmentionable Dune prequels detail the scouring of the earth with tons of nukes, but since the hunk is still there, I say that doesn't count

Earth is completely destroyed in Stephen Baxter's" Moonseed". In the previous book of his NASA Trilogy, humanity is wiped out by an asteroid, although the planet itself survives.

I just finished reading Dragon Keeper by Robin Hobb. It was amazing! You're in for a real treat, Veronica. The way I like to describe it is George R.R. Martin telling Anne McCaffrey's Pern series. The coolest part though was once I was done reading it, I emailed her a novel worth of all the things I loved about the book and she actually took the time to write a thoughtful response. Best week ever.

There was an animated sci-fi movie a few years ago that totally destroyed the Earth: Titan AE. Asimov's Foundation series basically portrays Earth as desolated by radiation.

Greg Bear liked to rain destruction on the earth in a lot of his earlier works. In some of those you could argue if he actually destroyed it or altered it beyond what we would recognize it today (Blood Music for instance). But in The Forge of God, he systematically destroys the earth down to rubble. In a sequel, Anvil of Stars, a handful of human survivors (yeah, long story) go off to seek revenge.
